The Common Management Aptitude Test (CMAT) conducted by the apex body AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) is a replacement for the state level management CETs. The major disadvantage CMAT inherited is that it is an ONLINE management entrance test in contrast with the traditional management CETs conducted by the respective state governments.
According to a report on DNA, the Director of Technical Education (DTE) Maharashtra will ask the state government to allow them conduct the CET. This year 39% of the MBA seats in Maharashtra are lying vacant, the story isn’t any better in other states which have scrapped PGCETs to pave route for the CMAT.
Earlier CMAT was subjected to controversy when AICTE announced it as the only test for MBA & PGDM admissions. AICTE also imposed CMAT to be considered in all AICTE approved Business Schools running PGDM courses. However with the intervention of the Supreme Court CMAT has become one of the five entrance exams including the CAT, MAT, XAT & ATMA for autonomous MBA colleges. CMAT still is the only test for the MBA colleges which are approved by the AICTE. Though CMAT was conducted thrice including an additional test in May 2013 it was not a crowd puller, several MBA colleges have lost students because the registration statistics for CMAT itself was low. Moreover MBA aspirants in some states like Karnataka were not ever that PGCET is replaced by CMAT.
The one nation one test idea was rooted by then the HRD Minister Mr.Kapil Sibal however it is likely that previous entrance tests will reappear. For instance the NEET UG which is a common medical entrance test for dental & medical colleges will soon be rolled back to AIPMT. So far the JEE Main & JEE advanced proposed by Sibal didn’t see any major problems. The importance of CMAT will now become a question, do share your views!
