The number of Indian students going for UK for studies have sharply declined by 24% according to the statistics released by Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). Stringent visa norms is one reason for the British Universities to loose Indian students, however neighboring countries China, Singapore, Hong Kong etc recorded an upward trend in the number of students at UK Universities.
Till April 2011, Indian students were automatically allowed to stay and work for two years in UK after their course, but as a result of the changes students can now stay for three years after their studies only if they find ‘graduate-level jobs’ on salaries of £20,000 or higher. David Cameron the Prime Minister of UK is expected to visit to India next month, issues related to immigration policies, removing Indian students from Immigration target figures are likely to be discussed.
After China, India sources most number of students to UK. The total number of Asian students studying in UK are 176450 out of the total 2061410 students (as of 2011/12).
