IITs likely to hike fee for UG courses

Be prepared to shed more money for your B.Tech or B.Arch course in IITs, the IIT council is mulling fee hike for undergraduate courses. It is reported that the standing committe of IIT council has proposed 80% fee hike or Rs 40,000 annual fee hike. The matter will be taken up by IIT council headed by MHRD on 07 January 2013.

Several things will be changed in the system from the coming academic year, the selection process at IITs has also been tweaked to accommodate weightage to board exam marks. There will be two tests one need to take to get into those prestigious technical Institutions, JEE Main & JEE Advanced. The application process for JEE will commence from 08 November 2012.

The proposed fee hike is to make IITs financially stable, no new infrastructure or improvement in standards has been discussed. What saddens most is the declining brand value of IITs in a global environment, according to QS World University Rankings  2012 none of our Institutes including IITs were seen in the Top 200 list. IIT Delhi, IIT Mumbai and IIT Kanpur ended up securing 212, 227 & 278 ranks respectively.
