Choosing A Business School: More Confusion, More Questions & Very Few Answers

Certainly it is true that these days there are Business Schools mushrooming every where, there is a Business School for every one. Gone were those days when Business Schools shortlisted (eliminated) students through various selection rounds including Group Discussion and Personal Interviews. It is about time that students are shortlisting Business Schools, every student is receiving brochures and tele calls from all Business Schools leaving the IIMs and the other creamy Business Schools (Symbiosis, SP Jain, XLRI, Narsee Monjee etc).

I have heard of Business School aspirants keeping a dozen admission letters, there are Business Schools which are shortlisting students without even applying for them. Yes, it is a harsh truth ‘Johnson’ (name changed) has got an admission letter from ‘ABC’ college’, the letter read that You have been shortlisted for joining MBA in our esteemed college with scholarship option. Further more it stated that the Institute has shortlisted based on merit in entrance exam (he hasn’t given one), Johnson approached careermitra.com for an advice on whether he should take the admission. This is not just one instance Business Schools have been innovating on ways to attract students, telephonic interviews, micro presentations leaving GD (the fact is there are not enough students to have a GD).

Advice: If you were to get shortlisted by a Business School without your intervention there is something fishy, don’t even think of finding about that Business School

Promises from some Business Schools have taken a high these days, certain lower rung Business Schools have to call students without any entrance exam. The obvious reasons they mention is that our admission criteria has very less value for aptitude test, we give importance to academics and interview.

Advice: Please don’t join any college which accept students without entrance exam

The placement part: Some Business Schools are showing creativity by mentioning the highest salary package close to Rs 20,00,000. There is no doubt that the college is setting a trap, even students from Tier A Business Schools won’t get such high package. Don’t just blindly go for the highest package offered, that could be a cooked up number.

The study tour: This could help but there will be so many terms and conditions, be clear and know everything in detail. First thing the Business School will charge for this, visa regulations, credits (marks) requirement; not every student will be taken to the study tour abroad. Importantly find out which University you will be taken to.

Please be aware and conduct independent verification about the college while enrolling in. There are instances where students have admitted without verifying the credibility of the college, there are some colleges which don’t come under AICTE or UGC. Though our Government every now and then pretends intervention but again it is just a part of the game!

This post could very well go on to next 10 pages but we have to keep it short for readability you can contribute the rest through comments!
