It won’t be a surprise if one says India imitates the West especially developed countries like USA, Indian Government and MHRD now wants to set up an ETS like testing authority (via).
ETS is the world’s largest nonprofit educational testing and assessment organization founded in 1947. ETS develops various standardized tests primarily in the United States for K–12 and higher education, and it also administers international tests including the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication), GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) General and Subject Tests, and The Praxis test Series — in more than 180 countries, and at over 9,000 locations worldwide.
In India the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducts AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Examination) and several other entrance exams like (AIPMT, CTET) including the board examinations for CBSE.
From next year on AIEEE is likely to get clubbed with IITJEE and a new SAT like test is expected to replace both IITJEE & AIEEE. To organize this newly proposed entrance exam MHRD is in plans to establish a testing assessment company on the lines of ETS. The new authority thus formed mayn’t immediately take up the responsibility to conduct the entrance exam. The new testing authority will help CBSE with research to prepare question papers and help in framing a curriculum.
The IITJEE & AIEEE merge will result in a SAT like test with 40% weightage to academics and 60% weightage to the entrance exam. This new mode of selection method is expected to be followed for selecting students in IITs, NITs and IIITs.
Such an idea is not liked by many; especially Alumni from the IITs are worried that the quality of students will only worsen if academic marks take weight in the selection process.
