Aakash Tablets To Be Made Free For Students

The world’s low cost tablet Aakash will now go free, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal told to sources. Aakash tablet was launched on 05 October 2012 by Kapil Sibal, initially the price was subsidized by the Government and students used to get at a discounted price (Rs 2500/-). While the commercial version UbiSlate 7 was priced at Rs 2900/-.

HRD Minister plans to make Aakash Tablet free for students, apart from the subsidized price Sibal wants the Institutes to contribute instead of asking students to pay. The Government wants every student to have access to Aakash Tablet PC. Sibal stated the percentage of contribution a Institute can make is left on the Institute.

As a student if you wish to avail Aakash Tablet PC your Institute should come forward!

  3. Shape of Things to Come?

    DNA ( Jan 13, 2013 ) reports as follows :

GOI will come out with a tender for 5 million Aakash Tablets by end of this month.

All the tablets will have to be supplied by Dec 2013.

The UPA hopes to woo young voters and their families with this scheme before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Almost 600,000 tablets need to be delivered EACH month, between April-Dec 2013, by multiple vendors.

This tender will possibly witness :

    • Some mergers & acquisitions amongst tablet manufacturers.

    • Emergence of “ Consortiums of Manufacturers “.

    • Jumping into fray by some leading Indian Smart phone manufacturers ( since they might be better placed to re-configure their smart phone assembly lines to assemble tablets ).

    • Setting up of local assembly lines by leading foreign manufacturers ( who have their eyes glued to the expected tender for 400 million smart phones that GOI wants to distribute free to “ Poor “ Aadhar card holders ).

This is going to be a “ Mother of all Battles “ which will decide the contours of India’s mobile devices industry.

  7. The Ultimate Winner

In its election manifesto , Samajwadi Party has promised :

 A free tablet for every student passing out of 10th standard ( ie: approx 5 million students )

 A free laptop for every student passing out of 12th standard ( ie: approx 3.5 milion students )

Yesterday , in a TV interview , Akhilesh Yadav has confirmed that his party will fulfill its promises

Already , Jaylalitha ( AIADMK ) has made a similar promise during last year’s elections in TamilNadu , which brought her to power

By now , TN Govt has already placed orders for Rs 1300 Crore worth of orders on Indian Manufacturers for supply of laptops !

And , to fulfill her promise , she must place similar-size orders every year for the next 4 years , till her term expires

It will be the same in UP for the next 5 years

I believe , Prakash Singh Badal who just won the state elections in Punjab has made similar promise – and he would not want to be accused of not having kept his promise when 2017 elections arrive !

No doubt , Gouda in Karnataka and Modi in Gujarat , who face State elections in a few months , will want to capitalize on this “ winning formula “

Before long , 50 million Indian students will be getting tablets / laptops , every year !

So , who is the ultimate winner in elections ?

Without doubt , the computer manufacturers !
