Supreme Court Asks MCI to Increase Medical Intake


Earlier Medical Council of India (MCI) had rejected a plea from three medical colleges for increasing intake. These private colleges had approached the Apex Court (Supreme Court) challenging MCI’s decision, court had ruled in favor of the private college petition and accordingly asked MCI to sanction additional intake from 100 to 150 from next academic year (2012 to 2013).

Supreme court had expressed it’s views on medical education in India; the court has said it is convinced that a growing economy like India requires more Doctors. India had not added Medical Colleges in good number to meet the growing requirement.

The three private colleges which will have an additional intake (+ 50) are:

  • Teerthanker Mahaveer Institute of Management and Technology
  • Rama Medical College Hospital and Research Centre and
  • School of Medical Sciences and Research, ShardaUniversity
