NIMHANS Bangalore Gets Autonomy Status

The 37 year old National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) gets the status of autonomous university. NIMHANS is based in Bangalore,¬†Government of India recognized NIMHANS as a ‘medical institute of national importance’ par with AIIMS-Delhi, JIPMER-Puducherry, PGI- Chandigarh, and Sree Chitra Medical Centre, Trivandrum. On 14 November 1994, NIMHANS was declared a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 (3 of 1956).

The Union Cabinet has approved the bill to sanction autonomy status for the Bangalore based NIMHANS. Officials on NIMHANS are excited and believed a dream come true, autonomy status gives the extra leverage to design curriculum, conduct exams without bothering about any University.

The major difference between autonomous universities and universities is that in universities curriculum will rarely get upgraded while autonomous universities upgrade their curriculum keeping in mind of current changes that happen in the respective domains.
