Supreme Court quashes NEET UG & NEET PG

Earlier it was the Supreme Court which directed MCI (Medical Council of India) to conduct common medical entrance exams for undergraduate & postgraduate medical courses, the same court now in a recent verdict says that “Medical Council of India had no powers to conduct single entrance examination and force it on government and private medical colleges”.

However this year the admissions based on NEET will remain unaffected, the fate of NEET in the coming years is in the air. All private, government medical & dental universities will be allowed to conduct their own entrance exams. The question is whether there will be NEET next year? A question which probably has more than a 100 answers but nothing will be accurate and one cannot consider any answer till the very last minute. The same has been happening from about a couple of years, thanks to the CBSE & MCI who has been responsible for such a confusion.

Although on the negative side it means multiple entrance exams, but still in our opinion it is the best choice for the medical aspirants. The reasons what we can think of can be summarized as below:

  1. Multiple exams, though a cost the probability of success is more. In contrast NEET is a one exam, one chance thing.
  2. Less confusion, it is nearly difficult even for MCI to integrate all the states, universities (private & government) under one single exam.
  3. Syllabus issues, MCI has been blamed earlier for the highly skewed (CBSE) syllabus structure for NEET UG. Having different exams conducted as per each state’s syllabus means a lot good for budding medicos.
  4. Allow people to do their own jobs, certainly MCI’s role is not to insist on holding entrance exams instead it should allow universities, medical colleges to do their job.

Kerala confirms participation in NEET UG 2013

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Under Graduate medical courses (MBBS / BDS) NEET UG as per the schedule announced by CBSE will be held on 05 May 2013. Kerala is one state which readily accepted the proposal made by the Medical Council of India (MCI), earlier MCI has insisted that all states should discontinue their own state level medical CETs from 2013 and allow admissions for MBBS & BDS courses based on merit in NEET UG. Andhra Pradesh & Tamil Nadu has secured legal defense through high court stay orders, while Karnataka, Kerala has agreed to abolish Medial CET and join NEET UG.

In Kerala & Karnataka MBBS & BDS aspirants should appear for NEET UG, the seat allotment process however will be made by their respective state governments. The reservation policies will remain as is, candidates while applying for NEET UG should also submit other requisite documents (which is to be notified by CBSE) to their state bodies for example Kerala bound students will submit to Commissioner for Entrance Examinations and Karnataka Students shall submit to Karnataka Examinations Authority.

Instead of KEAM 2013, Kerala students will give a shot at NEET UG 2013 and Karnataka will do away with CET and look forward for NEET UG. KEA website has information related to NEET UG syllabus.

NEET UG to be held in six regional languages apart from Hindi & English – Health Ministry

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has notified amendment in its regulations to conduct common entrance test viz. National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to Under Graduate (UG) and Post Graduate (PG) medical courses in the country from 2013-14. Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has been identified as the agency for conducting NEET for UG and National Board of Examinations (NBE) for PG medical courses.

Majority of States have accepted the proposal but few States have expressed apprehensions about the proposed NEET which pertained to syllabus, medium of test, reservation policy, etc. Most of the apprehensions have been addressed. The MCI’s regulations on NEET clearly indicate that the prevailing reservation policy of States would not be disturbed.

Further, the NEET-UG will be conducted in six regional languages viz. Gujarati, Bengali, Tamil, Marathi, Telugu and Assamese in addition to Hindi and English. Few medical colleges and State Governments have filed written petitions in respective Hon’ble High Courts seeking exemption from NEET. More than 26 such writ petitions have been transferred to the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India and the matter is sub-judice and any exclusion would depend upon the decision of Hon’ble Supreme Court in the pending transfer petitions.
