New JEE 2013 eligibility criteria, exact board cutoffs to be known only after board exams

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission to the undergraduate programmes in engineering would be conducted in two parts. JEE-MAIN and JEE-ADVANCED. The JEE-Advanced examination will be held after JEE-Main with a suitable time gap. Only the top 150,000 candidates (including all categories) in JEE-Main will be qualified to appear in the JEE-Advanced examination. Admissions to IITs will be based only on category-wise All India Rank (AIR) in JEE-Advanced, subject to the condition that such candidates are in the top 20 percentile of successful candidates in the respective Boards in applicable categories. As one time exception, in respect of those students who passed their Board exams in 2012, the eligibility criteria for joining IITs would be 60% marks in XII Board examination (55% for SC/ST/PD).

Marks to be secured by a candidate to fall within the top 20 percentile will vary from one Board to another and from one year to another year. The exact cut off of top 20 percentile marks in a Board marks will be known only after the Board results are declared, depending upon the marking pattern of any Board.

No two Boards are being equated, instead a candidate would be tested against his peers who have appeared in the same Board examination and whose performance has been evaluated in the same manner as them. The use of percentile ranking assumes that the quality of students is uniformly distributed across the Boards.

IITs unveil the procedure to select 150,000 candidates for JEE Advanced

The JEE Advanced is a secondary and final stage of the selection process for the prestigious IITs from academic year 2013-2014.

Candidates qualified in JEE Main will be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced with certain rules. Rule 1 is that only 150,000 or slightly more number of candidates will be made eligible to appear for JEE Advanced.

Procedure to select 150,000 candidates for JEE Advanced (as mentioned on http://jee.iitd.ac.in/)

  • 50.5% of the 1,50,000 (75,750 candidates) will be taken from the top rankers of the Common Merit List (CML) of JEE (Main). 27% (40,500), 15% (22,500) and 7.5% (11,250) candidates will be taken from the top rankers of the category rank lists of OBC-NCL, SC and ST, respectively. The candidates figuring in the category rank lists will be those who do not figure in the 75,750 candidates chosen from the CML.
  • 3% of the candidates selected within each category will be those belonging to PwD (Persons with Disability) sub-category, who figure in the respective rank lists of JEE (Main).
  • Only the candidate’s aggregate marks in JEE (Main) will be considered and no tie-break mechanism will be implemented at this stage. This will make the list of candidates eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced)-2013 slightly more than 1,50,000 due to bunching of candidates with the same aggregate marks at the bottom of each category.
