Will MCI Consider Regional Languages?

Medical Council of India (MCI) announced NEET UG 2012 syllabus, examination date and it’s stand on vernacular languages breaking the silence which only led to a new debate; parents are protesting that NEET UG should be in regional languages also. While Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh are asking one year time to join NEET UG on the grounds of non inclusion of regional language and difference in syllabus.

No conclusion can be drawn yet, parents who are protesting wants to move MCI to supreme court if justice is not done; although MCI announced the syllabus and entrance test date the final word has to come from Union Health Ministry. As per sources Union Health Ministry will not object MCI’s decision and keen to nod for NEET UG to be conducted by CBSE with declared rules. No official announcement has made yet! It is the final verdict that awaits parents and students who are hoping that NEET UG should not take place in 2012.

Parents are planning to approach chief ministers of their respective states to seek their involvement in postponing or cancelling NEET UG. This ambiguity may put additional stress on students who are preparing for the medical entrance exam this year; students are completely unaware as which syllabus they should follow. Competition for medical seats at UG level is always at a peak level; students who are serious to join MBBS consider medical entrance exam as the only priority in their daily routine. It is still not evident whether their will be a common medical entrance test nation wide or will there be exceptions for few states.

MCI or CBSE might not loose much by printing questions in regional language but is nagging just to keep their firm stand on conducting NEET in Hindi & English. Central government doesn’t want to involve into the matter as the orders to conduct NEET by MCI was signaled by Supreme Court; state governments are only left with an option of approaching supreme court or meeting Union Health Minister Mr. Gulam Nabi Azad.

The dilemma continues; there may be NEET UG in May 2012; languages, which states are participating is still an unanswered question. What do you think?

KERALA A ROLE MODEL STATE FOR PRO NEET
    ========================================

At a time when some States are indulging in nit picking to scuttle the process of NEET in 2012, Kerala stands tall as a beacon supporting NEET. In all these tumultuous time, Kerala is very clear in its thinking and stands by the decision of Central Govt, Supreme Court and MCI. In India Kerala have the maximum literacy rate and whenever any rule or Act comes into force against the well being of the people, Kerala would be the first State to oppose. At the same time, if it finds the same beneficial to people, it will be the first State to welcome and adopt. In the case of NEET, it appreciates the advantages and benefits of it and had readily adopted itself for the sake of its students.

As everyone knows, Kerala is a non-Hindi State, its official language is Malayalam, 80% of its students study State board Syllabus in Malayalam. Its State syllabus also has difference with that of core syllabus declared by MCI. It had State PMT which was set in English and Malayalam language. The so called grievances by the opposing States were all omnipresent in Kerala too. But the State was so prudent and proactive, it saw the advantages out weighing disadvantages, hence decided to take NEET.

In my village which is hundreds of miles away from Trivandrum, the Capital city of Kerala, the public is reasonably aware about the introduction of NEET. The institute where I am studying has been informing us the possibility of NEET in 2012. About a month back, the notice about NEET was put on the campus notice board and a copy of the same was stuck in each and every class room. In my institute each and every student is aware about NEET coming in May 2012. The institute was informed by the State education board and our institute had put up the notices in the entire campus even in canteen.

My institute had already started to adjust the curriculum according to the NEET syllabus and in fact in the last 2 weekly tests the question paper was set tougher to prepare the students for NEET. The institute had told us very clearly that students need to prepare themselves to deal the NEET questions in English only. The Malayalam papers were withdrawn from the monthly tests to begin with.

Kerala has 23 medical colleges in all in the State. The majority of them are private medical colleges. The Kerala Govt is so transparent that without buckling to the pressure of the pvt colleges, unlike the other opposing States, supports NEET to the hilt. Gujarat which is bigger than Kerala and which has a better GDP than Kerala has only 19 medical colleges, yet a small group of parents headed by a wealthy Doctor with the connivance of vested interest is opposing NEET in Ahmedabad.

Among all the States, Kerala definitely stands tall and majestic. In India we have 28 States and 7 Union Territories, except 5 or 6 States all other States have accepted NEET. Whether these States participate in NEET or not, it doesn’t matter, but NEET will definitely happen and we look forward to it eagerly.

On Behalf of all these Pro NEET States and students like me hailing from villages request the opposing States to change their minds and join NEET 2012 immediately.

Well medicine is taught in English in India for we still follow the british ppl. In Europe , Israel, Japan and south American countries, Russia and in many parts of world Medicine is taught in Vernacular languages. Those countries have also done tremendous progress in Medicine! We are definitely benefited for English is accepted as universal language, But after all doctors have to deal with patients and they must know the vernacular language. Every state has vernacular schools and majority of students study in Vernacular till 10th ( Esp in Rural India)So there has to be an option of vernacular medium for every exam. No one should suffer only because his English is not so good. If MCI can make Hindi Version then why not regional language version. Though Hindi is understood by most of Indians, answering Phy Chem and Bio in Hindi is not easy if one has studied in Vernacular language.
I wish to say , it has been proved that a child understands better when he is taught in his mother tongue.
My sincere request to Union Health Ministry to make an official announcement as early as possible. As the news goes, still it is not confirmed that NEET UG will be for 2012 as no college has yet been informed by the government. State board colleges cannot change their syllabus as per MCI. They need an official copy from the state board
( Which is under state education ministry). So unless govt announces officially we have to wait and watch.
Students are going thr’ pressures…neither Govt nor MCI has anything to do with that. Very sad!

Frends language problem is really a problem but as big as u r making it….
If u have to appear at manipal pmt or other exam which is conducted online then u have to know about using computer.. In these exams it is clearly mentioned that students have to learn comp a bit… If u r compltely unaware of como then how can u think about appearing in it….?????
U r saying that many doctors in bengal studied in bengali medium and qualified wbjee in bengali then how did they passed mbbs which is only taught in english…?????
I think they would have failed in the semstr xams thrice before learning english a bit….
Also if they know only bengali then how will they treat a patient from tamil nadu in their hospital as the patient can speak only in english and his regional language…
    This is competetive world dude…
And so far as rural poor students are concerned then there is no need to study only in luxary schools to learn english…
If u r zero in english then u dont need to be a doctor…
So stop telling these like a foolish….

    • Subhankar says:

      Prince.
U see ur own comment . Dnt tell others FOOLISH,okay? U dnt have any idea about ground reality so u r telling these. Nd for ur kind info i followed english medium. But lots of my frndz are from bengali vrsn who dservs their chance. Tell me, is MBBS taught in hindi? So why aipmt qstn paper is set in hindi also? Comment before thinking. Dnt pretend to be a leader here. Evryone has an opinion here. M following this blog for a long time.

Price has taken the liberty to call you a fool b’coz you used wrong words on me. Pl understand, whatever, you want to say, write decently without using bad words. This is a public forum, we are expected to behave decently….especially as a prospective Doctors, we need to maintain CIVILIZED language.

        • Subhankar says:

Oh i m sry dat i called u a nut, but u commented lyk a cheap thinker. Without knowing the reality dnt comment. Come in WB and see the scenario. A student doesn’t deserve a chance jst bcoz of he didn’t read in english vrsn? How selfish is that? Did u ever imagine urself in that place?

        • Subhankar says:

          Dinesh,
Look i support u too dat in class xi-xii, science should not be taught in english. I was in bengali medium upto class xi.. But then i chose english version. I faced problems at first but got habituated after 2-3 months. In our state(WB), there are about 85% students studying HSC in bengali vrsn. I dnt oppose NEET, but i think this is not the right time. State boards should be given atleast 2yrs 2 change their syllabus and make english version compulsory.. Dude,if NEET takes place this year, it will be a great loss for them. CBSE students, who r few in number, will get unfair advantage. To conduct a competitive exam in national level, at first a fair ground of competition should be created,am i ri8? Can u disagree in any of these?

          • Dinesh Kumar says:

Hey, I u/s your problem. Giving the benefit of doubt, I feel for at least the next 2 yrs, the vernacular language option may be given to WB. Thereafter, it should be made only in English.

    • Dinesh Kumar says:

      @Subhankar & Purna,
Not knowing english in HSC stage is like not knowing how to swim and ultimately taking a jump into the ocean called MBBS. There were several cases of students committing suicides, mostly rural students not able to cope with the lessons in medical / Engg. It is prudent for a student to learn english in HSC stage rather than in MBBS. Full Knowledge of medical lessons in MBBS is required to save the patients, if the student does not understand lessons in english, how do you expect him to be a good doctor. There may be bengali doctors, did you ever ask them how did they struggle to complete MBBS?? Are you mad or what??? can you not understand this simple logic.

We want good, efficient doctors and not half baked quacks. We are concerned about the safety of poor patients. Everyday we are reading news about patients dying because of poor treatment from doctors. We dont need such careless & inefficient doctors in our society.
So, think broadly and forget cheap thinking!!!!

YOU ARE RIGHT BUT TELL ME ONE THING IF ENGLISH WAS THAT IMPORTANT THEN WHY DID ALL GOVERNMENTS TILL NOW HAVE NOT REMOVED THE STATE LANGUAGES AND MAKE THE SCHOOL STUDIES IN ENGLISH ONLY. ALL STATE BOARD SCHOOLS TEACH IN THEIR LOCAL LANGUAGE . POOR PEOPLE WHO DON’T HAVE MONEY TO GO TO BETTER SCHOOLS GO TO SUCH STATE BOARD SCHOOLS. U AND ME LUCKY TO ONES TO GO TO GOOD SCHOOLS BUT THEN WE SHOULD UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEMS OF OTHERS.

        • Dinesh Kumar says:

I can explain. In Every State HSC is taught in English and local language medium. HSC leads to various diploma / degree /certificate courses which are taught in english & local languages. In degree there are courses in traditional medicine like ayurveda, unani etc which are taught in local language. But MBBBS is taught ONLY in ENGLISH in India. A student, whether he is rural or urban, has to decide in HSC which course he wants to take. If he decides to take MBBS, then he should switch over to english medium in HSC. If English medium is not available in his village, then he has to move to the nearest town where english medium is available or at least learn english language in HSC through books, CDs etc., and prepare himself to face entrance exam. In JIPMER we have questions on english knowledge, which I am sure you are aware of.
So mistake is on the students who dont choose the right medium in the HSC stage, they end up blaming the govt for their follies.

      • the game changer says:

BRO U YOURSELF ARE GIVING REASON WHY NEET SHOULD BE POSTPONED.
MAKE SYLLABUS COMMON AT NATIONAL LEVEL.
        TEACH HIGHER SECONDARY IN ENGLISH.
IMPROVE THE LEVEL OF SCHOOLS SO THAT STUDENTS FROM THESE SCHOOLS BECOME COMPETENT TO FIGHT NATIONAL LEVEL.
IT IS STILL DIFFICULT FOR ME TO UNDERSTAND WHY MCI SUCH A CRAP IDEA WITH SUCH DIVERSITY IN INDIA.

        • Dinesh Kumar says:

          Sorry….I disagree with you.
Its not that simple as you think. You cannot and should not make syllabus common at national level. Simply b’coz the students IQ levels are not same. Education has to cater to different levels of students. A student having low IQ, however rich he may be, cannot study in a ICSE syllabus school.
Regarding medium, not all higher level degree/diploma courses are taught in English. Some are taught in vernacular languages also. So, it is we who have to make the right choice at the right time to get into the course which we plan for.

Bro, our education, social, economical platforms are so varied and diversified, we cannot make our education and medium uniform.
Leave alone education, in all these years, after independence, are we able to make 1 Indian Language as national language??? Though the Govt wants to make Hindi as national language, it is unable to do so due to the diversity of our languages. This is one of the main reasons why we are still depending upon English as a common language in India.

          • Subhankar says:

A student of class x, how can he take dcitn about the future, that he will be dctr, engineer or IAS? Tell me this. Are you pretending that every student of ISC,CBSE is genious and every student of any state board is of low IQ?

            • Dinesh Kumar says:

Let me understand you, tell me in WB, are the HSC courses are same? I am sure, there would be different groups, like Pure Science (BiPCM), Computer science/Engg group, commerce group, economics group etc. A student wanting to take medical or engg has to be choose the BiPCM group. When he chooses this group in HSC, he has to get into english medium to develop his proficiency in english. This is what I was trying to explain to you.

            @DINESH KUMAR
DAMN MAN….. WHAT HAVE U WRITTEN.
U ARE SAYING EDUCATION SHOULD NOT BE MADE COMMON.
FIRST THING THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT GOVT. IS TRYING TO DO AND IS THE PRIMARY REQUIREMENT OF THIS NATION. ALL STUDENTS SHOULD BE BROUGHT AT SAME LEVEL. ALL STUDENTS NO MATTER HOW RICH OR HOW POOR HE IS ARE SAME AND DESERVE SAME. LOW AND HIGH IQ LEVEL IS DECIDED BY WHAT KIND OF ATMOSPHERE OR SCHOOLING HE HAS GOT. IT IS TRUE THAT CBSE STUDENTS ARE A BIT BETTER THAN STATE STUDENTS BUT THAT IS BECAUSE CBSE PROVIDES THAT KIND OF EDUCATION. PLUS CBSE SCHOOLS ARE LESS IN INDIA AND HAVE COMPARATIVELY HIGH FEES.
OUR EDUCATION LEVEL AT ANY LEVEL NEEDS TO BE BROUGHT AT SAME LEVEL SO THAT EXAMS LIKE NEET CAN BE CONDUCTED. UNTIL THEN WE SHOULD NOT BE THINKING ABOUT THEM.
U YOURSELF HAS HIGHLIGHTED THE DIVERSITY IN INDIA. I THINK U ARE GETTING CONFUSED . PLZ THINK BEFORE WRITYING.

            • Dinesh Kumar says:

I am not confused Bro. My own brother and myself studied in CBSE school. The school is same, same parent, same food, same uniform, all inputs are same. In fact after 7th standard we was given extra tuitions. Guess what, he scored 65% in his X Std.
Me without tuitions scored 91%. Just see the difference. In an homogenous atmosphere, though the inputs are same, the results are different. This is what is called as IQ level.

My cousin brother, who was studying IX std in a CBSE school could not cope up with the lessons. Upon consultation with an educationalist, he was shifted to State Board English medium school. Now he is doing well in his studies.

Hello, mate these are live examples which happened in my life and I can see happening around me. So Pl dont make mockery of this concept. Its a difficult concept to understand, but that is the reality.

Mate, pl believe me what I said was all true and not even an iota of lie. Trust me.

Prince, I support NEET. If it will happen in 2012, MCI should prepare the Q. P. in vernacular too along with English/Hindi. Your comment “I think they would have failed in the semstr xams thrice before learning english a bit….” Do you think this is the actual scenario? Many brilliant students of state board make their study in vernacular, but they are also good in English. English is one of their subjects. So, they r nt zero in English as u hv told. But problem is that they hv studied Ph. Ch. Bio. in vernacular medium. They hv 2 prepare themselves in these subjects in vernacular medium for final board exam. within next 3 months.

He thinks that he is carrying the battle of anti neet students and he just get after anyone who supports neet and try to shove him off this forum by his verbal abuse and hitler like attitude to dominate and dictate. Everyone has his right to express his thoughts but he doesn’t want to. He has personal vested interest to oppose neet. Everyone tried to present his thoughts but he attacked them directly. Many like prince, ramesh, john, dinesh, gupta, vijay m kiri, gazala, r thennavan and many more talked with him in gentle manner since last 2 months that neet will take place as per sc but like hitler he constantly abused them to present his vested personal interest. The situation is that now people like ramesh, john, vijay, gazala, thennavan have stopped posting anything. He doesn’t like anyone pro neet here. I don’t know why his blood starts boiling at seeing any posts of pro neet student. Its due to these all reasons that I hate him now. Also he is constantly camouflaging in these forum which makes it doubtful to believe any anti neet guy. Now also I believe 75 % that u r gc now that’s the situation he has created.

      • Dinesh Kumar says:

It is yet to be officially cancelled. In fact TOI, Goa had reported that NEET PG would be held in Jan 2011.

        • the game changer says:

          WE ALL KNOW THIS
BUT SC NEVER SAID IT “WILL” BE CONDUCTING NEET IN 2012. TIME CAN BE ADJUSTED TO SUIT STATES. NO PARENT OR STATE OR ANY ORGANISATION HAS SAID THAT THEY DON’T WANT IT , THEY ARE JUST SAYING THAT GIVE CHILDREN SOME TIME.

          • Dinesh Kumar says:

It is a well known fact that almost all private colleges and its association organs had been demanding that NEET should be concelled and they should be allowed to select candidates on their own.
Till today Tamilnadu does not want NEET and it has been opposing right from the beginning.
You have been saying that you want State CET and AIPMT instead of NEET.
If time is not the essence, then why do you think Central Govt refused to postpone??? .and. it suggested the doors of Sup court???

  12. care says:

resource base info. : mci doesnt ve loyal local language translators so they fear leaking of paper n thts y they say technically its not possible

    • the game changer says:

LEAKING OF PAPER JUST BY PUBLISHING THE PAPER IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE ALONG WITH HINDI AND ENGLISH……….. U GOTTA BE KIDDING ME……….. MENTION YOUR RESOURCE.

      • care says:

no kidding man !!! person who ‘s attended meeting wth mci n represented state has told off the record!!!!!!!! wt else technical reason it cud b……. take it seriously

  13. Dinesh Kumar says:

    Hello Srikant,
Language issue is not that easy to decide. If MCI decides to include language of WB,AP & Gujarat, it will open a Pandora box and the other States would also demand their languages. The important issue is that NCERT books are available in English and Hindi only. The NEET syllabus is based on NCERT primarily. Hence, if MCI decides to accept vernacular option then the States would start demanding books on vernacular language and thus it would lead to a situation of stalemate.
Obviously, MCI for these reasons remain non-committal about language issue.
The way things go, chances are there may not be language option until judiciary orders decides otherwise.

  14. k pravin says:

Guys go study for state pmts . seeing the political scenario in india ant the condition of congress they cannot do anything. even if notification is released prptesters will have neet get cancelled. why isn’t media covering this issue. mci cannot just ignore the protesters.

    • Dinesh Kumar says:

      Hello Mate,
NEET was decided by Supreme Court, no body other than the court has the powers to cancel NEET. Hence, aggrieved parties shall have to approach the court for relief.

      • Subhankar says:

SC gave “approval” for NEET. Didn’t ORDER that “NEET must happen”. @dinesh.

        • Dinesh Kumar says:

          HELLO SUBHANKAR
AFTER PLEADING THIS CASE SINCE 1992, AT LAST SUPREME COURT HAD GIVEN THE VERDICT IN THE NATIONAL AND PUBLIC INTEREST ON 07-03-2011 . SUPREME COURT HAD HEARD ALL THE STATE GOVT.. PLEA AND CENTRAL GOVT. PLEA .. THEY GAVE ORDER TO MCI TO MAKE NEET EXAMINATION REGULATION FOR U.G AND P.G MEDICAL ADMISSION . AFTER TAKING PERMISSION FROM CENTRAL GOVT. AND INVOLVING ALL THE STAKE HOLDERS, MCI HAD PUBLISISHED THE SAME IN GAZETTE OF INDIA ON DATED 27-12-10. SUPREME COURT HAD ALSO DECLARED IT AS LAW ,,SO CENTRAL GOVT CANNOT REFUSE CONDUCTING THE SAME UNDER PRESSURE OF STATE GOVT. IF IT DOES, IT MAY BE CONTEMPT OF SUPREME COURT ORDER OF DATED 07-03-2011. FOR FURTHER DETAILS PL CHECK SUPREME COURT CASE NO :- I.A-32 IN WRIT PETION NO. 443/1992 AND ALSO CASE NO W.P (C)380/2009 ON SUPREME COURT WEB SITE BY OPENING STATUS OF DISPOSABLE AND PENDING CASE ON VARIOUS DATE WISE—- IT IS NOW WRONG TO SAY BY ANY STATE THAT THEY WERE NOT HEARD IN S.C/ OR BY MCI BEFORE MAKING SUCH REGULATION.

AFTER SUPREME COURT PASSING THE ORDERS, IT BECOMES LAW AND EVERYONE HAS TO FOLLOW THIS. STATE GOVT’S ARE PUTTING UP DRAMAS TO APPEASE THE DISSIDENTS OF THEIR STATES.

  20. purna says:

Not only MBBS is taught in English, but also Hons. courses in Science subjects like Physics, Chemistry etc. are taught in English. Till now, the students who have studied in regional language, many of them become successful Doctors and Scientists later on. Am I right?

  21. Dr. Akshay says:

i m a doctor from maharashtra and all i like to share is that language should not be a issue in neet . if u have to disagree protest on the syllabi. after MBBS grduates will have to compete on national level for jobs and PG.

  22. B K GUPTA says:

When the study of whole MBBS is in English, then entrance should also be in English irrespective of anyone is from medium of Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, kannad, malayali, punjabi, Gujarati, Bhojpuri, Assamese, hariyanvi, rajsthani, manipuri, pali, sanskrit, gujarati, marathi, kokani, oriya, himachli, pali, kashmiri, urdu, arbi etc.
